“It is well established that osseoligamentous spine (bone and ligaments) is inherently unstable; that is, with out muscular support the spine – thoracic spine until sacrum (tail-bone), will buckle under the compression load of only 20N. Whereas the lumbar spine alone can support 90N of compression load.”
– Lee, D. The Pelvic Girdle – An integration of Clinic Expertise and Research. Pg 49., Fourth edition., Churchill Livingstone, Elsevier.
Our inference:
It is important to focus on strengthening the muscles that can provide dynamic stability (stability while we are in motion) and this would have a large role to play in effectively addressing low back pain.
